Jersey City is the second largest city in the state. In terms of population, it catches up to Newark, but leaves far behind the capital of Trenton. The city is located on the same peninsula as the north of Hoboken. To the east is the Hudson River and Manhattan River, to the south is Beyonn, and to the west is the Hackensak River.

Jersey City was once a major industrial center and housed the factories of Colgate and Dixon-Ticonderoga (the latter produces perhaps the most famous pencils in America). At that time, the city was a major railway hub. The city was crossed by large rail lines, with new immigrants leaving for America. Things are different now. Dozens of years of poor urban governance have badly affected a once-thriving city. Due to the outflow of population to suburbs in the mid-twentieth century, previously rich areas became centers of crime. Overall, the situation in Jersey City was a more grim reflection of what was happening in New York at the time.

In the 1970’s, Jersey City began to host large numbers of immigrants attracted by low home prices and the so-called American dream. Today, thanks to immigrants, the city can rightly be called a melting pot of different cultures and ethnicities. In this respect, Jersey City is the most diverse and interesting city in the state.

In the 1990s, New York's growing popularity also affected Jersey City. Glass skyscrapers, which house offices and condominiums, have grown in place of port warehouses. In the depths of the city, urban mansions began to be restored and the residents of the rich suburbs began to return to them. So the revival of the city began.

How to get

By plane

Jersey City is a 10-minute drive from Newark Liberty International Airport, IATA: EWR), which is a major hub of United airline and one of the three major airports serving the New York agglomeration. Taxi from the airport to Jersey City will cost about 40 dollars. An alternative taxi is a train. From the airport terminal you should take the AirTrain monorail to the Newark Airport station, then take the New Jersey Transit train, take one station to the Pennsylvania Newrak Station and take the PATH train to Jersey City. The AirTrain Monorail and the New Jersey Transit train costs $8.25, the PATH train costs $2.5. The trip takes about 45 minutes.

La Guardia and La Guardia airports. John Kennedy is in the Quins District of New York. Taxi from them to Jersey City will cost about $100. The cheaper alternative is to take the metro or bus from these airports to one of the PATH stations in Manhattan (see the Manhattan and New York pages for more information) and take the PATH train to Jersey City .

By train

Within Jersey City, the PATH metro system has the following stations: Journal Square, Grove Street, Exchange Place and Pavonia/Newport. With PATH, you can leave for Newark, Hoboken, Midtown and Downtown Manhattan. One trip costs $2.75. One-trip ticket (PATH SingleRide) can be purchased at ticket offices near the turnstiles. In addition, there are tickets for several trips, without time restrictions (PATH QuickCard). For PATH travel, you can also use the MetroCard with payment for your travel (Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard), but the MetroCard for unlimited number of trips to the New York metro (Unlimited Ride MetroCard) is not valid here.
