Jersey City is the second largest city in New Jersey. It is located in the northeastern part of the state on the banks of the Hudson River, right across from New York.
Understand
Jersey City is the second largest city in the state. In terms of population, it catches up to Newark, but leaves far behind the capital of Trenton. The city is located on the same peninsula as the north of Hoboken. To the east is the Hudson River and Manhattan River, to the south is Beyonn, and to the west is the Hackensak River.
Jersey City was once a major industrial center and housed the factories of Colgate and Dixon-Ticonderoga (the latter produces perhaps the most famous pencils in America). At that time, the city was a major railway hub. The city was crossed by large rail lines, with new immigrants leaving for America. Things are different now. Dozens of years of poor urban governance have badly affected a once-thriving city. Due to the outflow of population to suburbs in the mid-twentieth century, previously rich areas became centers of crime. Overall, the situation in Jersey City was a more grim reflection of what was happening in New York at the time.
In the 1970’s, Jersey City began to host large numbers of immigrants attracted by low home prices and the so-called American dream. Today, thanks to immigrants, the city can rightly be called a melting pot of different cultures and ethnicities. In this respect, Jersey City is the most diverse and interesting city in the state.
In the 1990s, New York's growing popularity also affected Jersey City. Glass skyscrapers, which house offices and condominiums, have grown in place of port warehouses. In the depths of the city, urban mansions began to be restored and the residents of the rich suburbs began to return to them. So the revival of the city began.
